Composition of Zinc Carbon batteries:
The zinc-carbon cell has a zinc anode, a manganese dioxide cathode, and an electrolyte of ammonium chloride or zinc chloride, which is dissolved in water. The container of the dry cell is made of zinc and serves as one of the electrode. The container is lined with a porous paper bag which separates the metal from the materials within the cell. A carbon i.e., graphite rod is kept at the center which functions as the other electrode. The space between the carbon rod and the zinc container is filled with a moist mixture of ammonium chloride, manganese dioxide, zinc chloride and carbon powder.
Variations:Their tolerance to hot and cold is minimal. Deteriorates temperature to the range of the above are100º F in cars during summer by driving out the moisture. During winter in 0º F its life decreases to the bare minimum.
Limitations:Carbon Zinc batteries work best with low or moderate power requirements. It is totally consumable. The Carbon Zinc has its own limitation in portable electronic products with higher drain but best for flashlights and intermittent use.
